Song of the Selkie

Duration | 6.25

This order comes in A4 and US Letter format with an MP3 Pronunciation guide.
This is a complex piece involving two clear-voices soloists with many vocal contrasts and colours.

“A Child walks by the sea and sings.
A Selkie echoes the song, coming closer to the shore,
singing to the child of the great ocean, dark and ancient.
The song is powerful, bringing the Selkie on to the shore.
They dance in the fading sun.
But the Child is called away by the human world.
The Selkie sings again, this time alone as it returns to the darkening sea.
Where it has always been.”

This piece captures the inevitability of transformation, themes deeply rooted in both Irish and Icelandic folklore. The Selkie – a seal that can become human – symbolises the pull between the human and natural world, reflecting the fragile and profound interplay between worlds.
