A Stór mo Chroí / My Love, my Heart

Duration | 4:20

I’m never asked about this piece, but it is the most significant arrangement I ever did. Dating from the start of An Uaithne it helps clarify much of my opinion about the tradition of singing in Ireland. This is a ballad-style song about emigration. I passionately believed when I set this nearly 40 years ago that more awareness of the beauty of the actual melodic lines, not always a priority for the tradition where the line is secondary to the text, will draw more people to the beauty of the tradition. So this has always been performed by a non-traditional performer, in this recording Miriam Blennerhassett.

The melody is not easy to sing for a non-traditional singer and demands colour and nuance.
