Since the Great Famine of the mid-19th century, Ireland has witnessed the emigration of millions of its people to every part of the world. This is one of many songs written in an effort to explain the sense of loss experienced by those forced to leave all that they knew, often for life. All too frequently, these songs have been sentimentalised to the extent that their direct, sad power has been diluted. This setting is bleak and startling, with a soaring solo line offset against shifting male drones. The solo can be sung by a male of female singer.
